The arguments over how to best build muscle and gain weight fast will rage on forever.

The endless arguments over how an effective bodybuilding program should be structured in order to build muscle and gain weight fast will most likely continue until the end of time. Just scour the Internet message boards, flip through any muscle magazine or talk to the sales rep at your local supplement store. No matter whom you talk to or what you end up reading, everyone’s got an “expert opinion” on how to build muscle and gain weight fast.

This is confusing for a beginner—how do you know who to trust? Not knowing which answer to trust can be hard, especially since you’ll have tons of questions about the process.

How many days a week should I spend training at the gym? How many sets for each major muscle? What’s the best rep range? What are the best exercises for stimulating my muscles? How long should I workout?

There are answers to all these questions, as long as you spend some time in trying to find them. But we’re not talking about that in this article.

There’s so much debate and confusion that most lifters totally miss the big picture. Figuring out the best exercises and rep ranges are important, but not nearly as important as one principle that forms the backbone of the muscle growth process.

Don’t even think about brushing aside or ignoring this principle or you will find yourself virtually unable to achieve significant muscle growth.

Bottom line: muscle growth occurs as a natural response to stress. When you workout with weights, you are making “micro-tears” in your muscle tissue. Your body sees this as a threat to its survival and it is equipped to save you from these “attacks”—it will increase the size and strength of the muscle tissue as a response.

Therefore, if you want to build muscle and gain weight fast, you will have to focus on progressing every week by increasing the weights you lift or by squeezing out an extra rep or two. This way, the muscles will have no choice but to continue getting larger and stronger as a response to the increasing stress.

Getting muscular is all about getting stronger!

So, what is the most effective muscle-building tool on the market today?

Nothing more than a pen and some paper!

Although the details of how to build muscle and gain weight fast matter, the most important thing at the end of the day is progression, regardless of your training style.

It doesn’t matter how much time you invest in the specific details of how to build muscle and gain weight fast—if you don’t increase your strength every week, you will not gain muscle.

Take time out to examine how you train. It is critical that you be diligent about recording the amount of weight you lift and the reps you perform and then do everything you can to increase it the following week. Fail to do this and you are simply wasting time.
